Quando Atsushi era entrato nell'ufficio dell'Agenzia di Detective Armati, dove lavorava da ormai un anno, quella mattina, si era stupito nel non trovare nessuno. Era già pronto a vedere Kunikida urlare contro Dazai per svariati motivi, ma l'Agenzia sembrava letteralmente deserta.
"Dazai-san? ... Kunikida-san?"
Chiamò quei nomi con un tono di voce un po' incerto, guardandosi per bene attorno. Dalla stanza in cui si trovava o da quelle adiacenti non proveniva alcun rumore e nessuno rispose, segno che effettivamente non c'era nessuno lì nell'edificio. Atsushi sospirò appena e allungò una mano nella tasca dei pantaloni in cerca del cellulare e ne osservò lo schermo: nessuno lo aveva chiamato, gli aveva scritto o gli aveva lasciato un messaggio anche solo su un foglio di carta e la cosa era strana. Stava per comporre il numero di Kunikida, Dazai era quasi sicuramente a cercare un nuovo modo per suicidarsi, quando la sua attenzione venne catturata da un vocio fuori dalla porta d'ingresso.
"Siamo in ritardo, deficiente! Atsushi sarà già arrivato a quest'ora."
Atsushi immaginava come Kunikida-san stesse scuotendo Dazai-san: quella era una scena che si ripeteva quasi ogni giorno. Ciò che si domandava era per cosa fossero in ritardo e, soprattutto, cosa c'entrasse la sua presenza o no nell'ufficio.
"Kunikida-kun, la torta diventerà poltiglia se non la smetti di scuotermi!"
L'ex membro della Port Mafia fu, molto probabilmente, lasciato e finalmente i due detective più anziani entrarono nella stanza. Dazai teneva in mano una scatola bianca con delle scritte in nero. L'uomo sorrideva, mentre Kunikida sembrava alquanto infastidito.
"La sorpresa non ci è riuscita del tutto, ma buon compleanno, Atsushi-kun!"
La scatola venne aperta sulla scrivania di Dazai: conteneva una torta semplice al cioccolato bianco, sopra di essa vi erano gli auguri per lui e, a vedere tutto quello, Atsushi iniziò a piangere. Le sue erano lacrime di gioia e felicità. Dal giorno in cui aveva incontrato Dazai erano successe davvero tante cose, ma doveva ringraziare ognuno di loro per quel tempo prezioso che poteva passare ogni giorno lì.
Gli altri detective erano diventati la famiglia che lui mai aveva conosciuto e ogni giorno il ragazzo tigre si sentiva amato, non denigrato come era sempre successo all'orfanotrofio. Quella era la sua casa, lì veniva trattato come tutti gli altri e, soprattutto, anche i suoi colleghi avevano dei poteri speciali e si sentiva capito.
"Io... grazie Dazai-san, Kunikida-san... è un gesto davvero gentile da parte vostra. Non me lo sarei mai aspettato: anche se sono qui con voi da ormai un anno, ancora mi devo abituare del tutto alla vostra gentilezza. Non ho mai festeggiato il mio compleanno, né ricevuto torte. Questo è il più bel regalo di compleanno. Grazie infinite."
